Warrington & Vale Royal College celebrates success as groundbreaking ESOL reading initiative leads to published books with Gatehouse Books
01/04/2025
Warrington & Vale Royal College is proud to announce the success of its innovative reading initiative, which has led to the publication of a bespoke series of books, now available to purchase nationwide through respected adult literacy publisher Gatehouse Books.
The initiative began last year when ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) tutor Rama Rangan identified a critical gap in suitable reading materials for pre-entry ESOL students. Many of these students arrived at the college with little or no English, often from refugee backgrounds or war-torn countries. Unable to find appropriate books with the right vocabulary and context, Rama took the inspiring step of writing her own.
Set in familiar surroundings and using carefully selected vocabulary, Rama’s stories were designed to resonate with her students. Working alongside Learning Resources Manager Bethan Bligh, the team transformed these stories into accessible reading books. Bethan formatted Rama’s words, added clear images and ensured the books were easy to read. The impact was immediate. Not only did students experience academic improvements in reading, writing, listening, and speaking, but they also gained personal confidence and a genuine love of reading.
Bethan Bligh said: “What started as one book quickly grew into six, as Rama saw firsthand the joy and progress her students made. These books have sparked a real buzz around reading at the college. Students who were once reluctant readers have now become enthusiastic, reading over 200 books this term alone! We've also celebrated their achievements with certificates and prizes, making this a whole-college success story.”
The success of the in-house books caught the attention of Catherine White, Director of Gatehouse Books—a renowned local publishing company that specialises in books for adult literacy. Catherine worked closely with the college team to further develop Rama’s books, ensuring they were of the highest standard for wider distribution. Now, these inspiring books are available for purchase nationwide at www.gatehousebooks.co.uk.
Bethan continued: “This is a heart-warming story of dedication, innovation, and community collaboration. We’re incredibly proud of what’s been achieved—not just as a college, but as a community and as individuals.”
Tim Evans, Curriculum Manager for ESOL at the college, said: “I am truly blown away. These are the reasons we work in education, and the support provided to these students has been incredible.” Tim emphasised the collective cross-college effort driving this success, acknowledging the unwavering commitment of all involved parties.
The college was recently inspected by Ofsted and the recently published report says: “Students on ESOL courses, including refugees and asylum seekers, learn the language skills they need to integrate successfully into their community. They develop confidence in their daily lives to make medical appointments or apply for jobs.”
